About

Epidemiological forecasts have (unfortunately) come to the fore due to the COVID-19 outbreak as a tool to guide public health strategies. This talk will address the issue of epidemic forecasting by exploiting a gray box approach that takes advantage of mathematical modeling of infectious disease as well as data-driven machine learning techniques. Such a hybrid approach tries to make up for the gaps that persist in our knowledge of COVID-19 and the lack of data, by enhancing the performance of the prediction model in scenarios where the accuracy of white/black box models is unsatisfactory.

Luca Tiberio Consoli is a data scientist at the advanced analysis center of Engineering Ingegneria Informatica. He obtained an M. Sc. in theoretical physics from Sapienza University (Rome), where his research focused on quantum gravity and non-commutative geometries. As a data scientist with a mathematical modeling background, Luca currently works in the synergistic integration of analytical modeling and machine learning, to get the best out of both approaches. In Engineering he designs and implements AI-based software solutions.
