Shifting perspective on bias in AI: from eradication to continuous reflection
About
Current practices of AI application in society, from algorithmic systems in healthcare learning to prioritize some patients over others or ASR systems processing some voices better than others, urgently support the goal of bias eradication. In this talk, I will suggest that bias is an essential element of being human which can not escape seeping into our technological creations, and will present several strategies for the responsible design of AI that can account for the inalienable presence of bias and still mitigate its impact.

I work in the ethics of technology to help ensure an informed design and use of technologies. I am specifically interested in the role of technologies in value change, and how to design with this in mind. I am passionate about fostering a stronger connection between ethics and technology development, the connection that recent media coverages on algorithmic bias and privacy strongly support. Currently, I am exploring the cases of AI applications in the household domain (e.g., voice assistants), healthcare and police.
